Shoes For All
Dr. Mary Carlson
Dr. Carlson is a Podiatrist practicing in Williston Park, NY and also the Founder and President of Shoes for All. She attended NY College of Podiatric Medicine and became the first student to be awarded an American Podiatric Medical Association grant to conduct research on enhancing diagnostic foot x-rays. This research article was published in 1999.
Following her Doctorate Degree, she entered postgraduate training at NY Methodist Hospital, an affiliate of NY Hospital with an emphasis on advanced surgical training in reconstructive lower extremity procedures. Subsequently, her career has included several successful practices in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island as well as being asked to join the staff at NY Methodist Wound Care Center. She is currently affiliated with North Shore LIJ Medical center.
Throughout the years her work has extended beyond medicine. While her private practice consumes a large portion of her day, she started to look within the community to see how she could help. Her most charitable cause started in September 2010 during the Williston Park Street Fair. During this time, she put out a call to the local community to bring new shoes so that we could provide shoes to Long Island’s neediest. The response was overwhelming and Shoes for All was born. Since the inception of this 501 (3) © non-profit charity, we have provided needed footwear to over 65,000 men, women and children within the five boroughs, Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
In 2012 we were fortunate enough to acquire donated office space from Capital One Bank in Albertson. Due to the response from the local community shoe drives, we needed to expand our volunteers and reached out to several high school Life Skills Programs, providing a program for special needs students to learn work skills. Shoes for All is proud to say that Herricks, Roslyn and Mineola High Schools are still participants in this program.
Shoes for All also recruited many agencies and organizations to conduct shoe drives; North Shore LIJ Hospital, Boys & Girls Scouts, Churches, Corporations, Nassau County Homemakers Clubs and various schools.
Our organization provides shoes to the following recipients all through the year: Aids center of queens County (ACQC), LI Council of Churches, Community Solidarity, The INN, Opening Word, many shelters in Long Island, just to name a few – there are many more.
Shoes for All also participates in, and works alongside, three different programs during the year; Harvest for the world in Roosevelt NY, Veterans Stand Down in Freeport and Veterans Assistance Day in Hempstead, where we have provided new sneakers an slippers to our Veterans.
Maryann has dedicated her career to educating students and teachers to meeting the everyday challenges in the classrooms of the NYC public school system. Her leadership qualities allow her the ability to communicate with teachers on how children learn best.
Since its inception, Ms Veltre has been Vice President of Shoes for All and has worked side-by-side with Dr. Carlson in creating a vision for what SFA has become today.
Whether in school or helping those in need, Ms. Veltre continues to be motivated to serve the community.
